Oryx
The Oryx are majestic animals weighing up to 500 pounds with straight black horns reaching 40 inches. These beautiful animals are one of the most sought after exotics that roam the New Mexico Chihuahuan Desert.
These animals are descendants from the 93 oryx gazelles, from the Kalahari region of Africa, that the New Mexico Game and Fish Department released into the 2.2 million acre White Sands Missile Range in 1969. The Oryx have taken to their New Mexico habitat and have thrived. Current herd population is estimated near 5000 with their range now extending from Albuquerque to West Texas.
Oryx are nomadic creatures that are constantly on the move. Tactics vary with weather conditions and include glassing from distance, spot and stalk, and tracking.
The Oryx is a beautiful creature that few are afforded the opportunity to hunt and is considered a great "out-of-season" adventure. New Mexico Game and Fish is actively seeking to reduce herd sizes across the state. Future hunts will become more difficult as these animals become harder to find. Do not miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Oryx hunts will take place on the public land units surrounding the White Sands Missile Range. The Prime Tine Outdoors staff will do the scouting to put you on one of these elusive exotics.
The Oryx is a beautiful mount and will make an excellent addition to your wall collection. The meat is outstanding, many consider the Oryx best game meat available.
